Tater Tot Hotdish is a savory comfort food that is incredibly easy to make and allows for tons of flexibility with ingredients. I grew up eating this stuff coming from a large family so I wanted to share my version of this delicious meal.
All you will need for my version of Tater Tot Hotdish is tater tots, cream of chicken soup, lean ground beef, onion, frozen green beans (thawed), salt, pepper, and cajun spice.
Prepping the meat
This part takes the longest of everything in the prep portion, and by longest, I mean no more than 10 minutes to prep! You will heat up a skillet with some olive oil and add diced onions to the pan. Cook the onions until they are soft/translucent, but not burnt or crispy.
Once you have sweat the onion it is time to add your beef. Simply put the ground beef in the onion mix and cook until the beef is no longer pink. About halfway through the meat cooking process, when the beef is broken apart nice, you will want to add your salt, pepper, and cajun spice, cooking it into the beef and onion mix.
Baking your hotdish casserole
So once the meat is finished cooking you are going to add it as the first thing to you 9×13″ casserole dish. Once the meat is added you will add both cans of the cream of chicken soup. I used two cans because it ups the flavor in my opinion and makes the casserole thicker, which I like. There are a lot of recipes that have more ground beef and less soup, this is just how I prep it. Once the soup is in with the ground beef, simply mix it all together incorporating it nicely. Spread the soup and meat mixture flat in the casserole dish, as if you were icing a cake.
Now that you have your soup mixed with the meat, it is time to add your veggies. I use just green beans, but like I said before, there are so many variations of tater tot hot dish that calls for corn, carrots, green beans and many other veggies. Feel free to be creative and add whatever veggies you would like. For my green beans, I place 1 cup of them on top of the meat and soup mix and spread them out evenly. I will gently push them down, not fully, so they are somewhat incorporated into the soup and meat mix.
Finally, last but not least, add your tater tots. Just put your tater tots one next to another until the entire dish is covered. You will use almost the entire 32 oz. bag of tater tots when covering the casserole. Once the casserole is covered throw it in the preheated, 350-degree oven for about 50 minutes. You will know when the casserole is done when the tater tots are a nice golden brown. The below picture is PRE cooking.
Tater Tot Hotdish Casserole

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a skillet, sweat the onions until they are soft and translucent. Then add the ground beef, pepper, salt and cajun seasoning and cook until the beef is no longer pink.
Add the beef to your 9x13" baking dish. Add the 2 cans of soup and mix it with the beef until it is all incorporated together. After the soup and beef have been mixed gently add the green beans to the casserole.
Top with an even layer of tater tots and put it in the oven for 50-60 minutes. You want the tater tots to be a nice golden brown.
And that’s it! Hopefully, you enjoy the tater tot casserole as much as I do. Leave your comments and questions below.
